S(no)w Regrets

I caught up with Sam Janssens ’16 to get an insiders perspective on what it is like to be a skiier. She recently competed with the NDA Ski Team at the MIAA High School State Championship and regularly competes in races in New Hampshire.

What inspired you to first start skiing?

“I first started skiing when I was 2, so I didn’t have much of a choice then. But, I started racing about 4 years ago. I did it because I really liked skiing and wanted to do more than just mess around the mountain.”

What is your favorite part about skiing?

“My favorite part about skiing is definitely the freedom it makes you feel and how it’s just you, your skis, and the mountain (plus other skiers, but oh well). It is very liberating, and, of course, very exciting. Also, it’s so outdoorsy and really makes you feel one with nature.”

What do you like best about being on the NDA ski team?

“The best part of the NDA ski team is definitely how we really do act as a team. Every single team member is important, whether they are the first varsity racer or the last JV. Also, the captains always do an amazing job of leading, running, and organizing the team.”

skiing4What is a typical ski race like?

“A typical ski race is really nerve-racking. You have to get up really early in the morning to get there (unless it’s a night race at blue hills) and drive for hours to get to the mountain. Then, you inspect the course and do your run(s). I get extremely nervous before every race, regardless of it’s difficulty. I get just as nervous for the NDA races at blue hills as I do for the really difficult races that I do up in New Hampshire. But all that nervousness is definitely worth it.”

Do you have any words of wisdom for any aspiring skiers out there?

“To the aspiring skiers, I say go for it. In my opinion, skiing is the best sport ever invented and if you want to ski race you should take the opportunity. It is one of the best choices that I have ever made.”
