to-kill-a-mockingbirdTo Kill a Mockingbird, released in 1960, was Harper Lee’s only novel to be published… until now. Eighty-eight year old Lee will release her sequel to the classic novel in July of 2015. (The title is bound to further confuse Rob Gronkowski of the New England Patriots.) Go Set a Watchman was written in the 1950s. It was actually written before To Kill a Mockingbird. The manuscript was shelved as her editor suggested she re-write the story from Scout’s younger point of view.

Harper Lee’s sister passed away in November and the manuscript was found in her safety deposit box. It is reported that Lee was amazed at the discovery as she assumed it had been lost forever. However, there is a debate concerning how much Lee is actually cognizant of. It has been disclosed that she is in poor health, in a wheelchair, and suffered from a stroke. She is now residing in an assisted living center. Local residents have announced that Lee has vision and hearing problems as well.

In Go Set a Watchman, Scout Finch is an adult who now lives in New York and goes back to her hometown in Alabama to visit her father. The publisher announced, “She is forced to grapple with issues both personal and political as she tries to understand her father’s attitude toward society, and her own feelings about the place where she was born and spent her childhood.”

Public expectation is high for the sequel to the Pulitzer Prize winning novel. Interest in a movie deal is also buzzing. Pre-orders are being taken on barnesandnoble.com. The hardcover price is $16.79 and the Kindle version is $15.99. A July release-date makes this a perfect summer read!
