The week before Thanksgiving, fifteen seniors gathered in the gym for a self-defense class. It was taught by our own School Resource Officer, Officer Salituri, along with four other local police officers. We started out by learning the different ways of positioning ourselves as an attacker approaches. Then we practiced punches and kicks, focusing on the vulnerable areas to target. Our last day involved applying what we learned. We defended ourselves against the officers who role-played as attackers.

Each senior had to defend and protect themselves, while fleeing the dangerous situation of two men “attacking them.” This was the most helpful part of the class. By simulating an actual attack, we now are better prepared to handle this type of danger. This class was not only very informative, but was also interactive and fun. Completing this nine hour course gave me more self-confidence in knowing how to react.

I recommend that all senior girls participate in a self-defense class before heading off to college.
