Diversity on Broadway

Diversity+on+Broadway

Show business is notorious for being a hard industry to get into, holding to this statement diversity in the theatre has taken time to develop. One of Broadway’s longest running shows, Wicked, has just welcomed the first woman of color to play Glinda. Brittney Johnson debuted as Glinda in the Wicked Broadway cast in early January. Although other actors of color have been in Wicked, the coveted role of Glinda had yet to be portrayed by a woman of color. To make Johnson’s opening night even sweeter Johnson and her mom saw the show many years ago and got to share a special moment afterward allowing the experience to come full circle. Johnson has been with the Wicked Broadway cast since June of 2018 as an ensemble member and understudy for Glinda. Now Johnson can officially say she’s hit headlines in the Broadway world and has become “Popular,” for the Wicked fans out there! Congrats Brittney, here’s to being the first of many diverse Glinda’s.
