STYLE SECTION Cotillion 2015

Cotillion is approaching and although many have purchased their dresses for the event, some are still deliberating their attire. There is no steadfast rule as to what is ideal apparel for this event but something to keep in mind is, in my opinion, comfort. From hair to accessories and dresses to shoes, choose items that suit you and are appropriate for a long night of dancing with friends. Cotillions tend to lean toward the darker colors indicative of this autumnal time of year. Navy, burgundy, gold, teal, deep greens, browns, all regal colors that represent fall are sure to compliment a plethora of skin and hair types. Choose a color that compliments your skin tone and a dress silhouette that works for your body type rather than trendy items.

All dress lengths appear to be appropriate for Cotillion but most girls seem to choose shorter dresses, which allow more freedom of movement. We all know what cut and color compliments our figures and camouflages our trouble spots. When in doubt, black is always a flattering choice and very appropriate on almost every body type. Choose your shoes wisely as you will be in them ALL night! Many websites suggest wearing your shoes prior to the night of the event to see if they are really the shoes you want to wear for an evening of dancing. According to www.fashionista.com velvet shoes are very in!

Now that you have purchased your dress and shoes, let’s accessorize. If your dress has plenty of embellishment, tread lightly with jewelry, as you don’t want too much bling to give you the appearance of a disco ball. If your dress requires some elevation then by all means accessorize. According to www.fashionista.com large single earrings, ear cuffs, and pins adorned with pearls and rhinestones are considered fashion-forward accessories. In Style Magazine believes the cuff bracelet is a “season must have jewelry trend” and can be purchased affordably with semi precious stones at www.madewell.com. This website has an abundance of trendy mixed with classic pieces that are sure to enhance your outfit as well as create a nice addition to your fall accessories.

“Sophistication isn’t what you wear, or who you know, or pushing people down to get you where you want to go.”

Two metal-free hair elastics
Four hairpins (or more if necessary)
Hairspray

  1. Begin by smoothing all the hair up into a high ponytail.
  2. Grab your favorite donut hair accessory and thread the ponytail through the center.
  3. Spread the hair around the edges of the donut and pop another elastic over the top.
  4. Separate the hair sticking out from the donut into two halves, left and right.
  5. Starting on the right side, twist the hair towards the bun and bring the twist around the front of the bun, towards the left ear.
  6. Secure the ends of the hair with a pin next to the donut bun.
  7. Now move to the left side and begin twisting the hair in the other direction.
  8. Lay the twist in front of the other one and secure it next to the bun as well.
  9. Gently loosen the donut bun by pulling the hair up to create the illusion of a larger bun.
  10. Finish with hairspray and you are done!

Hairspray

  1. Create a middle or center part, whichever you prefer.
  2. Start a Dutch braid on one side by crossing the outer sections under the middle piece. This way the braid looks like it’s sitting on top of your hair, instead of blending in.
  3. To continue the braid, keep adding small sections of hair before you cross under the middle section.
  4. Braid all the way down to the nape of your neck, staying close to your hairline on the sides.
  5. Finish by doing a regular braid for just a few passes at the end; then secure with a hair tie so it’s out of your way.
  6. Repeat steps 2-5 on the other side.
  7. When you finish the second braid, take the elastic off of the first plait and gather the two into a ponytail.
  8. Gently tug at the sections of hair that make up each braid, so they look thicker. Plus, it creates a cool, tousled style!
  9. Twist the ponytail into a bun, and use bobby pins to secure in place.
  10. Spritz your style with a little hairspray if necessary.
