Cuvilly’s Take on NOAA

Recently, the Cuvilly Division students went on a field trip to the Taunton Weather Service (NOAA). On this field trip the students saw a power point presentation about fresh water and coastal floods. They learned that the meteorologists measure how much water is in the snow by using a long pole which is stuck in the snow and then put on a scale. This is important because if there is a lot of water in the snow, then it is possible for floods to occur. Floods are dangerous because they can are wreck someone’s house especially if they live near the coast or on a beach.

The students also saw meteorologists working and putting the weather in to the computer for towns all around Massachusetts. They update their website every 3 hours. You can visit their website at www.forcast@weather.gov. Their website includes maps of the different satellite images. There is information such as temperature, wind speed, barometric pressure, and what it looks like outside. These meteorologists take shifts to work all day. They rotate midnight shifts every 6-9 weeks. The 7th grade students learned a lot about floods and what meteorologists do at the Taunton Weather Service.

Thanks to Mrs. Troy for arranging this wonderful trip!
